Denver, CO – MURP student Lily Lizarraga Ruelas was awarded the prestigious 2016-17 Temple Hoyne Buell Endowed Ambassadorial Scholarship in December! The annual program provides a $30,000 scholarship for undergraduate or graduate studies outside the U.S. through a partnership of Rotary District 5450 and the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation.
Lily will study in Santiago, Chile, at Pontifica Universidad Catolica de Chile in the Integrated Urban Planning Certificate Program. She writes, “The certificate program consists of three modules each with a different focus. The modules focus on Planning and Management of Cities and Regions, Neighborhoods and Urban Projects, and Urban Housing Projects. A specific portion of the budget has been put aside for the implementation of a Rotarian project to be done in conjunction with Pontifica staff and students. My primary area of focus is the informal city “slums” and how nontraditional planning tactics have emerged to incorporate the poor into the cities of Latin America. The idea is that the students during the modules of Neighborhoods and Urban Projects or Urban Housing Projects will design a project that will then be implemented with the money budgeted from the scholarship. I am extremely honored to have received this scholarship and look forward to my time in Chile.”
Lily is the second MURP student in two years to win the prestigious award. MURP alumnus Trevor Clifford received the scholarship in 2014 to study in Thailand.
